Darndest is an independent software studio based in New York City. We build a short list of apps for Apple platforms and intend to still be maintaining them years from now.
Why we exist
The good version of software is quieter.
A lot of what ships today is designed to maximize the time you spend inside it. That incentive shapes everything downstream — the notifications, the streaks, the endless feeds, the data collection that funds it all.
We think there’s a better trade available. Charge people a fair price. Build something they open on purpose. Let them leave when they’re done. It’s a smaller business, and a much better product.
That principle is the whole reason the studio exists, and it’s the filter every feature has to pass through.
How we build
Native, small, and maintained.
- Native first. Swift and SwiftUI, following Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines. Apps should feel like they belong on the platform.
- Few dependencies. Every library we add is code we’re responsible for. We add them sparingly.
- Accessible from the start. Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, and contrast are build requirements, not a follow-up release.
- Privacy by construction. The easiest data to protect is the data we never collect.
- Shipped, then supported. Launch is the beginning of the work. We answer our own support email.
