Independent software studio · New York City
Software that respects your time and attention.
Darndest is a small, independent studio. We design and build a short list of apps for Apple platforms — carefully, and with the patience to get the details right.
What we do
One thing at a time, done properly.
Most software is built to capture as much of your day as it can. We build the opposite: focused tools you open with a purpose, use well, and close.
Design
Interface and interaction design grounded in Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines. Native patterns, legible typography, and motion that explains rather than decorates.
Engineering
Native apps written in Swift and SwiftUI. We keep the codebase small, the dependency list shorter, and the app responsive on the devices people actually carry.
Audio & content
Original narration, sound design, and session writing produced in-house, so what you hear in the app is made for the app rather than licensed from a library.
Our first product
Journalcast
A guided journaling app that pairs narrated audio sessions with background music, so you never face a blank page alone.
- No blank page. Each session opens with a narrated prompt that gives you somewhere to start.
- Keep your thoughts moving. Audio paces the session so you write instead of stalling.
- Feel clearer in minutes. Sessions are built to fit into a real day, not to become another chore.
How we work
The commitments we hold ourselves to.
Your data is yours
We collect the minimum required to make an app work, we tell you plainly what that is, and we don’t sell it or trade it to advertisers.
No engagement traps
No streak guilt, no manufactured urgency, no notifications designed to pull you back in. Success is you getting what you came for and leaving.
Honest pricing
You will always know what you are paying for and how to stop paying for it. No dark patterns around cancellation.
Accessible by default
Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, sensible contrast, and reduced-motion support are part of the build, not a later release.
